Bergamot (Citrus bergamia) Essential Oil

About: Bergamot peel is well known for its use in Earl Grey tea. It is a popular antidepressant. This oil is cold pressed from the peel of the Bergamot fruit, a method that is different to the regular steam distillation method of essential oil manufacturing.

Uses: When used in aromatherapy, Bergamot essential oil can dissipate anxious feelings while providing cleansing and purifying benefits. Several compounds in Bergamot have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties. How to Use: These practical instructions show how to incorporate essential oils into everyday routines for maximum benefits, depending on their usage;

1. Aromatherapy: Add a few drops of essential oil, to a diffuser or an oil burner to fill the room with fragrance while dissipating the therapeutic benefits of the oil. Alternatively, you can inhale the scent directly from the bottle or place a few drops on a tissue and breathe in deeply for therapeutic benefits.

2. Skincare: Mix 2-5 drops of essential oil in 1 teaspoon of a carrier oil (2-5% dilution) like Jojoba or Fractionated Coconut oil. Apply the mixture to the skin to help with skin ailments. Always perform a patch test on inner elbow first to ensure there’s no skin sensitivity.

3. Hair Care: Combine essential oils with a carrier oil (2-5% dilution) such as King Coconut oil and massage into the scalp. Leave it on for 15-30 minutes before washing out. For added benefits, you can also add a few drops to your regular shampoo or conditioner.

4. Pain Relief (Massages): Dilute essential oil in a carrier oil (2-5% dilution), and massage the mixture onto sore muscles, joints, or the temples for headache relief. Alternatively, add a few drops to a warm bath for muscle relaxation and a soothing effect.

5. Respiratory Support: Add a few drops of essential oil to a bowl of hot water. Lean over the bowl, cover your head with a towel, and inhale the steam deeply to help clear congestion and alleviate cold and sinusitis symptoms. You can also diffuse the oils in your bedroom overnight or inhale it directly from the bottle.

6. Sleep Aid: Diffuse essential oil in your bedroom for 30 minutes before bedtime. Alternatively, mix a few drops with a carrier oil and apply to your wrists, neck, or the soles of your feet to help induce a state of relaxation.

7. Natural Cleaning: Add a few drops of antimicrobial essential oils to a container filled with water, water and vinegar or alcohol (5-20% dilution). Use this mixture to clean countertops, tiles, glass, or other surfaces. Essential oils can also be added to laundry loads to help disinfect and add a fresh scent.

8. Insect Repellent: Mix essential oil with water in a spray bottle, and apply to skin and clothing before going outdoors. You can also diffuse these oils in outdoor and indoor seating areas to keep harmful insects and pests away.

9. Oral Health: Add a drop of Clove or Cinnamon essential oil to a glass of water, and use it as a mouthwash. Add a drop of essential oil to a teaspoon of Sesame oil and use it as an oil pulling mouth wash, for bad breath, and gum health. For toothaches, mix a drop of Clove oil with a carrier oil and apply it to the affected area to soothe gum discomfort.

10. Mood Enhancement: Diffuse calming, relaxing, or energizing essential oils depending on your mood. You can also inhale the scent directly from the bottle, use essential oils as a natural perfume or add a few drops to a handkerchief and carry it with you for a quick pick-me-up during the day.

Caution: For external use only. Avoid contact with the eyes. Discontinue use if any irritation occurs. Natural essential oils are highly concentrated and should be mixed with a carrier oil (2-5% of essential oil in 95-98% of carrier oil) before applying on the skin.
